The rapper XXXTentatcion — whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy — has been pronounced dead after being shot in a “possible drive-by [shooting],” TMZ reports. The 20-year-old musician was reportedly shopping for motorcycles in Florida when a gunman approached his vehicle and fired.
XXX was featured on the cover of XXL magazine’s 2017 “Fresherman issue” after winning the most votes in a fan contest. He released his debut album, 17, in 2017, and his second album, ?, this past March. This record debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, and the singles “Sad!” and “Changes” hit number 7 and 37 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.
An Instagram story from the last 24 hours showed that XXX was planning a charity event in Florida this coming weekend.
In the past three years, XXX’s rise to fame had coincided with a variety of legal issues. He’d been charged with over 12 different felonies, including allegations of domestic abuse which Pitchfork Chronicles with the publication of a devastating testimony transcript from the alleged victim, a then-pregnant woman (though he denied the charges, and had pled not guilty). XXX’s music was temporarily removed from Spotify’s playlists in May over the allegations, after the streaming platform moved to cut the music of artists accused of “misconduct,” but was reinstated after a backlash from other musicians.
